Life is as dear to a mute creature as it is to a man. Just as one wants happiness and fears pain, just as one wants to live and not die, so do other creatures-The Dalai Lama
It’s often said that those who teach us the most about humanity aren’t always human. With this thinking in place a group of women freelancers joined hands to formally form street crusaders. Each one of us was helping animals in our own way and it’s destiny that brought us together to contribute to the society in a more structured way. It is a non-profit organization that rescues street animals to provide them with shelter and better life.
Our journey started together in 2018. Papiya Adhikary and Bulbul Das formed a team to take their passion ahead. Both individuals have only one common goal and that is to help these voiceless. Both worked day in and day out to reach to as many cases possible. Some friends joined, some funds collected and encouraged them to do more for them. They faced many adversities, but their strong will never allowed them to deviate from helping these souls. With dream in their eyes, they wish to build a shelter to cater to sick, abandoned and old stray animals.
She has been an avid animal lover from childhood and always had a pet in her home. Her real challenge started when she found 17 strays in her locality with cases of cruelty, run-overs, and aggressive dogs due to shortage of food post she shifted to Kolkata way back in 1997. Sterilization was not a common practice then, but she realized that is the only solution. She started doing sterilization one by one with the help of local NGO and thereby controlled further increase of population. With her own limited financial help she started doing spot treatment in her nearby areas. She slowly gained popularity in the locality and people started reaching out to her for advices, treatment and coordination for sterilization. She has voiced her opinion in many cruelty cases and also participated in meetings seeking justice.
She too like her friend has been very emotional from childhood for these voiceless souls. She received support for this since childhood from her family and also started helping strays along with her brother in her locality from her pocket money. With the help of PFA, she started doing sterilization in her neighboring areas Years passed on and she had to relocate to other cities due to job purpose, but she continued to help strays with the help of local ngo’s. She has been mostly remotely providing all necessary financial/non-financial support to sustain the goal of street crusaders.
Priyanka has been one of our active volunteers. Her whole family is an avid animal lover .She herself feeds around 40 strays (both dogs & cats) daily and attends to their medical needs from time to time. She is a working professional and so whenever she gets time, she volunteers with us happily in our various activities like vaccinations, various treatments, going with us to pet clinics, fostering rescue animals, sterilization programs.
In our present society, the love for breed dogs are increasing, while our own pariah dogs are getting extinct due to neglect and cruelty.
We’re working to restore compassion to Kolkata’s relationship with its stray animals, easing the strain on India’s overburdened shelter network through funding, organizational support, education, and more.
